Contact Bruce M. Pitman, who heads our family law practice, to discuss your specific situation and your options. We are based in Springfield, New Jersey, serving clients in Union, Essex, Bergen and surrounding counties.
We represent any party in family matters:
- Divorce and property division
- Child custody and child support
- Modifications of custody or parenting plans
- Modifications of child support or alimony
- Relocation out of state with children after divorce
- Enforcement of child support or interference with visitation
- Grandparents rights to visitation
- Property agreements for same-sex couples or unmarried domestic partners to identify separate assets and guide division of property if the relationship ends
- Prenuptial agreements and post-marital agreements to protect separate assets of each spouse in the event of divorce
- Adoption
- Paternity actions
Adoptions
We assist stepparents in the formal adoption of a stepchild, to assert legal authority and responsibility for the child and establish inheritance rights. We can also represent grandparents, aunts and uncles, foster parents or older siblings in adopting a child who has been placed in their care because of abuse, neglect or abandonment by the natural parent(s). These actions involve the termination of parental rights of one or both birth parents. If the termination is contested, we represent clients in court hearings to demonstrate abandonment or why the natural parent is unfit (drug use, child abuse, criminal activity) and represents a danger to the welfare of the child.
Paternity
Our firm represents either party in paternity actions:
- Men seeking a paternity test to prove they are not the father
- Women seeking to establish child support
- Men who acknowledge paternity and wish to petition for shared custody or visitation
We can arrange DNA testing to settle the question of paternity, and assist in filing motions for financial support or custody. Child support is calculated the same way as for married parents who divorce.
